Advanced Practice Nurse (RN) - Career Choices

Job Description:

Advanced Practice Nurses are Registered Nurses (RNs) with a masters degree or higher, additional training and responsibilities.   They practice with more autonomy, and may have prescriptive authority.   The principal types of  Advance Practice Nurses are:

·          Nurse Practitioners (NP or ARNP) provide primary and preventive health care services, prescribe medication, and diagnose and treat common minor illnesses and injuries. 

·          Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) administer more than 65 percent of anesthetics given to patients each year.

·          Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) handle physical and mental health problems within their area of specialization, and also work in consultation, research, education, and administration.

·           Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) provide well-woman gynecological and low-risk obstetrical care.
