Clinical: Neurology, EEG and END - Career Choices

Job Description:

There are multiple Electroneurodiagnostic (END) tests to monitor brain and nerve function. Technicians/Technologists may be trained in one or more of the following techniques:

Evoked Potential (EP)

  • Recording of electrical activity from the brain, spinal nerves, or sensory receptors that occurs in direct response to an stimulus such as sound, a visual pattern, or mild electrical current.

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

  • Evaluate electrical potentials from peripheral nerves. Technologists stimulate the nerve with an electrical current and then record how long it takes the nerve impulse to reach the muscle.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

  • Recording of the on-going electrical activity of the brain. The EEG may be used Intraoperatively (IONM) to monitor brain function during surgery, or Long Term Monitoring (LTM) to diagnose seizures over a longer period of time.

Polysomnogram (PSG)

  • This is a special electroneurodiagnostic procedure that uses EEG and other physiologic monitors to evaluate sleep and sleep disorders.
