Job Description:
Child Life
Specialists are professionals who are specially trained to
help children and their families understand and manage
challenging life events and stressful healthcare experiences,
whether the child is ill, or a close family member:
-
Focus on the
psychosocial needs of children, easing a child's fear and
anxiety with therapeutic and recreational play activities.
-
Consider the needs
of siblings and others indirectly affected by illness or trauma.
-
Support and educate
families and other healthcare personnel.
-
Function in an
interdisciplinary team, which may include physicians, nurses,
social workers, therapists, counselors, teachers, parents and
others.

To Get Licensed:
- OR state requirements for licensure:
None

Through the
Child Life Professional Certification
Examination, individuals may pursue
achieving the CCLS – a professional
designation for Child Life Specialists. The
eligibility requirements for taking the
certification exam are: baccalaureate degree
with adequate course work; and completing
480 hours of child life experience under the
supervision of a Certified Child Life
Specialist.

certification requirements:

Family Dynamics; Human Development;
Psychology; Sociology; Counseling;
Education; Expressive Therapies (e.g.,
play, music, dance, art); and Therapeutic
Recreation

Note:
courses on death & dying, biomedical
ethics, cultural diversity and recreation
admin will be accepted regardless of
college department; sports courses under
physical education are not acceptable
